Welcome to Story Hour! Today: How Daisy Came To Be

Background

Well, I don't want to have to be the one to give you the sex talk but when two puppies are really (umm what's the politically correct way of saying this) erotically charged, they do the dirty. Approximately 56 to 72 days1 later, voila! Puppy time! Now in Daisy's case they "erotically charged" breeds were a Miniature Beagle and a Shetland Sheepdog. The remainder of her litter were longer-haired similar to that of the Shetland Sheepdog. She was the runt of the litter, and the only one with such distinct Beagle features. Daisy was born in 2008, on approximately February 14th. Since the owners could not care for the puppies they took Daisy and her siblings to a nearby "kill" animal shelter in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, some 480 miles away from our town. For those of you who know anything about "kill" shelters, we are lucky we got her.

How She Came To Us
About a month and a half after Daisy was born, Nate's mom, stepfather and brother were traveling to Florida for Nate's stepbrother's wedding. Due to unforeseen financial hardship, we were unable to attend. So while they were in Florida, we dog-sat there Schnauzer, Muffin (see right). We had recently moved into our first real house. No landlord or anything. We basically were ready for a dog. So, when Nate's mom called to check in on us and Muffin she was given an ultimatum by Nate: "Bring us back a dog or we keep Muffin." I mean Muffin was well behaved, for the most part, and trained. We thought for sure it wasn't going to happen. On their drive back home, they stopped in Hopkinsville Kentucky, visiting the shelter where Daisy was. Nate's stepfather walked right up to where Daisy and her siblings were, and picked her right up and said this one's it. He didn't have to look at any others. Nate's mother asked the shelter attendants, what she would have to do to take this dog home today. They told her sign the form and pay the small fee. His mom was slightly concerned, asking if they needed the local vet's number or anything. They said nope. So this adorable little dog, about the size of a twenty ounce water bottle (see above) made the trek back to Iowa. The entire way home she slept on a pillow on her new uncle's lap. At the hotel, she was quite the commodity. The staff even offered to puppy-sit while my future in-laws went to a restaurant. They declined this offer, and opted for pizza in-room instead. When they made it back into town, Nate went to drop Muffin back off at their house and came home with this tiny little puppy. We played with her for some time that night. and even took a few pictures. Since then she has become such spoiled dog. You can read more about Daisy's favorite and quirks at LongLiveYourDog.com. You can also see all sorts of pictures and even a couple videos there. In the meantime though, here's a few to hold you over.
